It's getting pretty crowded in here -- 60 percent of all featured providers are "Leaders". MariaDB gets an "honorable mention".

AWS and Databricks among (many) leaders in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for 2022 Cloud DBMS

It’s that time of the year for Cloud Database vendors when they get to celebrate the sightings of their names in the “magic” quadrant.

“Did you put your name in the leaders’ quadrant, Harry?” Dumbledore asked calmly.

And the flurry of expected blog posts from all the usual suspects.

Seeing that more than half of the shortlisted names ended up in the same leaders’ quadrant based on Gartner’s two dimensions (Vision and Execution), each vendor then proceeded to – effectively – further split the leaders quadrant into more quadrants based on their own yard sticks.

AWS had the easiest job – calling their positioning “furthest in vision” and “highest in execution” (yes that’s the title of their official blogpost). Databricks reiterated their vision of the “Lakehouse Architecture” which they have been the most prominent thought leaders on, while also highlighting their open-source credentials.
